Unknown v. Known
July 9, 2009
A new article in Fortune Magazine asks six top economic experts if it’s time to spend more of the allocated $499B stimulus money. So far, $56.3B has been spent with $157.8B immediately available. Out of the six experts, three said “no” and two said “yes.” The sixth refused to commit saying “it’s too early to tell.” What this proves is that no one — not even the country’s top economists — knows what lies ahead. Even more reason to look at what we do know: the American worker is the backbone of the economy and therefore focusing on how to increase levels of job engagement and employee satisfaction should be a primary recovery strategy.

More than 1 out of 2 Employees Want Out!
July 8, 2009
A new survey out from Adecco Group estimates that 54 percent of the workforce want out of their jobs and will look for another the minute the economy turns around. For Gen Y, the number rises to 71 percent. These findings should set off warning bells in the C-Suite of every company from coast to coast. How can you expect to pull your company out of an economic depression if more than 1 out of 2 of your employees can’t wait to leave? Along with the “I can’t wait to leave” workview comes lack of commitment, little or no creativity and significantly less productivity. Only those companies who understand how the meaning of work is evolving and how it is reconfiguring the values of the American worker will be able to turn this negativity around.
Employees want to matter. Employees want to have a chance at the wheel and drive for a change instead of simply being passengers in the backseat–or worse–locked in the trunk where their voices are completely silenced. Look at who your employees are and how you can leverage their unique abilities to the advantage of your company. Leave the industrial age behind and create employee driven, process-centered environments instead of product-centered environments. When today’s employees are empowered to make an imprint on their environment, they will be clamoring to stay in instead of get out. Then watch how the end “product” becomes better than ever. It’s a lifeline out of these terrible economic times if companies would only reach out to grab it. Almost Famous rip

Bill Gates Letter
June 26, 2009
download cerrone cerrone s paradise
Today, Bill Gates posted his first letter as co-chairman of his foundation. He talks about the foundation losing 20% of its assets last year and cites a 1930 essay from John Maynard Keynes (Keynesian economics) that mirrors our current economic situation. One thing that I found interesting was that Gates said he would likely “make mistakes in over-applying some elements from my previous experience and will need to adjust.” In essence, I believe he is talking about the “mistake” of applying old business paradigms to an emerging new business frontier with all new values and principles–culturally and economically. The letter also has a lot of value in looking at the direct relationship between global health and economics. It’s a bit long but interesting nonetheless. You can read the letter here

New Site
June 24, 2009
For anyone who has went through the process of redesigning (or designing) a website, you know that it is a long and nerve wracking process! For all of my return visitors, you can see that the site is all new — much more visual, more movement and lots of added content.
I was fortunate to work with Peter Spannagle of Your Custom Blog the music of cosmos vangelis

to create a site that will stay relevant–something my own work is based upon–for a long time. That’s why it’s blog style giving me control to immediately update and add content to reflect what’s going on in the world of work.
Before the redesign, some of the older blog posts disappeared, so I’m looking forward to adding a lot of relevant (there’s that word again) new content in the weeks and months ahead.
Happy New Year!

Small Business Depression

Meet Joe Black movie Midnight Run Jagged Edge download annihilator – refresh the demon download
Recession, crisis or downturn, small businesses are without a doubt experiencing an economic depression. A new report out by the National Federation of Independent Business found that the optimism index of small business owners is at its second lowest level in thirty-five years. Most depressing to me is that these entrepreneurs represent the heart and soul of our economic reinvention. They have the ideas and drive to create the type of innovations that will change our world and also create the next big corporation that will employ thousands and thousands of Americans.
Trying to survive by selling off inventory, laying people off, cutting hours of operation and foregoing any new capital investment in advancing their products and services, the future economic loss due to what is clearly a small business depression is immeasurable. In terms of coming back from the brink, entrepreneurs need some serious economic stimulation. Today, President Obama announced plans to target $15B to buying up small business loans in an effort to encourage banks to once again invest in entrepreneurs. This is important because ending the small business depression is about much more than tax breaks. It’s also about refocusing our attention from a top down mentality. After all, some of the world’s greatest innovations were born in garage-based start-ups!

Democratization of Boards
June 7, 2009
A very interesting and timely piece in NY Magazine this past week by Roger Lowenstein titled, “A Seat at the Table.” It’s about the new SEC proposal giving stockholders a voice in who runs the companies funded by their hard earned investments. This move toward a “democratization of the board” is simply another indication that access to specialized information in the knowledge era is changing the dynamics of the business playing field. It’s a great idea and you’ll hear loud cries from CEO’s who don’t want any controls–much less oversight–placed on out-of-control spending. We’ll see what happens as this proposal moves forward. My guess is that the investor will win because it is simply part of the evolution of the world of work.

What a Difference a Day Makes
February 4, 2009
The new federal limits announced today on executive pay are just one more indicator that the old world of work is evaporating forever. Adding more fuel to the restructuring of power and influence in the American workplace, compensation limits will ultimately contribute to the development of more employee centered organizations and prove to be good for business. Why? Primarily because it will lead to higher employee motivation and job engagement, which in turn produces greater innovation, commitment to excellence and profits.

Gen Y
September 12, 2008
Later this month I’m collaborating on the first ever Gen Y workplace roundtable bringing together managers and corporate leaders with USC business students to discuss the very important issue of communication gaps relative to generational management. It’s come about as a result of my three year research project on communication and connection in the workplace and I’m excited about its potential. It seems that almost all major companies who have the budget are hiring people to address management issues around the Gen Y topic. I believe we are the first university to create this type of event focusing on communication based solutions. I’ll put up the links to media coverage of this event as they are available!

Post "D-List"
August 22, 2008
The feedback from being on Kathy Griffin’s “My Life on the D-List” has been great over the last couple of weeks. I’ve heard from people I haven’t seen in years who saw the show and even got recognized in a few restaurants! It’s been a lot of fun. If you haven’t seen it, check BravoTV.com for the episode, “What’s Woz’s Love Got to do With It?” Book sales also spiked and it even sold out on Amazon. The communication power of the media continues to fascinate me. Fortunately, communication is what I do! The new semester starts next week at USC so to all of my students, it’s going to be a great fall!

Kirk on Kathy Griffin's "D List"
July 31, 2008
Make sure you tune in Kathy Griffin’s “My Life on the D List” on Thursday, August 7th! Last semester Kathy accepted my invitation to come and speak to my class after I sent her a copy of “The G Quotient.” It was a blast and as usual, she was a riot and of course, outrageous. She was also extremely generous with the students and stayed long after class to sign autographs and take photos. Definitely A-list!
