The tangible value of diversity

Two things that really strike me as interesting this week that suggest the world may be catching up with the reality of living in a diverse global business economy. While talking to the CEO of a Fortune 100 company as part of research for a new book, he said something that was telling. “Some of the so called business titans of today are watching their companies splinter into two worlds. One world recognizes that diversity is directly related to profits. The other sees it as an inconvenience. If these leaders don’t boldly unite their companies under the commercial value of diversity rather than just giving it lip service on their corporate websites, the future of their companies is dim.” The other thing is that following an article about gay CEO’s which ran Monday in the Philadelphia Inquirer in which I was quoted, I received an email from what would be the U.S. equivalent of VP Human Resources from a large technology company in India. Somehow he read the article and wanted to find out if there were any reports that suggested companies with gay employees had greater profits. What I thought was telling about our global economy was that this thought was even articulated in a country not known for being gay friendly. The world is definitely getting smaller and flatter.
